The sun is shining here at Tonik HQ and we have been inspired to put together a list of five reasons why you should go solar.
Unlike some environmentally unfriendly fuels, when there’s a devastating spill of solar energy, it’s just called a nice day!
OK, this one might seem obvious but it’s important! Solar panels are made up of solar cells, which allow light particles (photons) to generate electricity which is a greener alternative to burning coal or other fossil fuels. Solar panels are silent and don’t require anything other than sunlight to generate electricity. The Energy Savings Trust says that a home solar PV system could save around 2 tonnes of carbon per year.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that because the UK doesn’t have the same sunny climate as Australia or South Africa, solar panels aren’t as effective here. They are powered by light, not heat, so even though they will produce more energy on a sunny day in the height of summer, they will still work when the skies are grey!
After investing in solar panels you’ll see an immediate impact on your monthly bills - as by generating your own electricity, you’ll need to buy less from the grid. This is not only great for the short term but in the long run, this will help protect you against the upwards trend of grid energy prices.
Once you’ve got to grips with your new solar system, you can make money by selling energy back to the grid. Thanks to the Feed-In Tariff scheme, you will be paid for the electricity your panels generate. In addition, you will receive an extra payment for any excess energy you sell back to the grid.
In the future, solar panels may even add value to your home. A study in California found that buyers were willing to pay $15,000 extra for a home with a solar panel system. Not to mention the sleek design of our Tonik Solar systems that will give your home a modern and sophisticated makeover, all black panels that can be sunk into your roof for a low profile finish.
Solar panels often generate more electricity than you need during the day, for example while you’re at work. Any energy that is generated but not used by your home will automatically spill on to the grid. However, if you pair your solar panels with a home battery you can store this excess electricity for use after the sun goes down. We’ll have more to share on our home batteries soon, but these can always be added to new or existing solar installations.
You can pretty much forget about the panels once they’re installed, they require very little maintenance. This is because they have no moving parts: we wouldn’t need much maintenance either if we spent all our time sunbathing!
Our solar panels have been tested to withstand adverse weather conditions and they come with a 25 year power output warranty and a 5 year workmanship warranty.
So there you have it, 5 reasons why you should go solar and step over to the bright side of life.
