How to read a smart meter

Oct 22, 2018

We know that whilst smart meters are clever, they can sometimes be confusing to read. So we've pulled together some simple tips to help you keep an eye on your energy use and complete your meter reading.

There are two main smart styles: electricity meters or gas meters. You can also have an in-home display to help keep an eye on how much energy you are using. If you don’t have a smart meter and need help reading your traditional meter, please click here.

How to read a smart electric meter

Keypad - single rate

Smart Meter Reading - Single Rate

To get a reading from this meter, please:

  • Press 9 on your keypad
  • "KWH" will appear on the digital meter display
  • 8 digits will then be displayed, for example, 0023453.3 - this is your meter reading in kWh (kilowatt hours)
  • Make a note of this reading, including any numbers after the decimal place

Keypad - E7/two rate

If you have an economy 7 or E7 smart meter, (also sometimes referred to as a day/night or a two rate meter), follow the steps below to get your meter readings.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple solution to easily identify which is your day or night meter read, though some meters may specify which is which on the meter.
If you are unsure, a tip would be during the day to note down both meter readings and the time, then come back an hour or so later and do the same thing again. You should see that one meter reading has advanced, this would indicate that this is the day/normal rate.
