Here we go: our UK-wide smart meter installation programme is starting in the new year. We’re going to be racing all over the country, region-by-region, to get to all of our members as efficiently as possible.
Not only that, but during November this year we’ve already started the process of communicating with 1000 of our members’ existing smart meters, so they no longer need to take monthly readings themselves.
Our product director, Steve Springett, outlines the instant benefits.
“First and foremost,” says Steve, “you’ll be able to see exactly what you’re using putting you more in control of your spend. Smart meters will allow us to receive a remote read from our members, so we won’t need to send a meter reader round and we’ll be able to provide accurate bills. That’s good for customers and suppliers – because it’s less disruptive and more convenient.”
Ultimately, though, Tonik wants to take smart meters beyond this basic functionality in order to realise the technology’s full potential. We see smart metering as the beginning of a new relationship with your energy use.
“But at Tonik we don’t want to stop there,” says Steve. “The end result is taking the data a step further so we can provide you with insightful, actionable information – and use this as a building block for money-saving smart tariffs that will enhance the capabilities of our solar, battery and EV products in your home of the future.”

If you don’t already have one, we’ll be dropping you an email when we’re installing in your area, and – if you give us the go-ahead – our meter installation team will get in touch to make an appointment.
The installation itself is fairly straightforward. Generally, we’ll be out of your hair in less than 2 hours for a dual fuel installation, and from that moment onwards you’ll have the benefit of accurate bills and you can see what energy you’re using within your home instantaneously on your new In Home Display unit. In a few cases, though, additional fixes will be required in order to make the installation possible – which we’ll deal with as efficiently as possible on a case-by-case basis.
The smart meter and its installation come at no extra cost, and there won’t be any additional charges to your energy bill once the meter is fitted.
(N.B. if you don’t give us the go-ahead then that’s not a problem either – you’re not obligated to get a smart meter.)
With Tonik at least, it’s likely you’ll be able to keep your old smart meter. As mentioned above, we’ve already started communicating with 1000 of our members’ existing smart meters at no extra cost – avoiding the waste of installing a new one unnecessarily.
