Tonik + Alexander Sims = fast cars, clean tech and a whole lot of electricity
Dec 7, 2018 - 4min read
We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve partnered with British racing driver Alexander Sims - and together we’re going to champion renewable energy, low carbon technology and electric mobility!
This is only the fifth season of the FIA Formula E Championship, but last year it had over half a billion online views – so we can safely say that all-electric racing is doing a little more than simply catching on. But, if you’re new to the sport, here’s a quick summary of what to expect from Alexander, Tonik, and Formula E this coming season:
Formula E: The future of racing
One way of describing Formula E is that it’s basically the electric version of Formula 1 – but that doesn’t quite do justice to the uniqueness that this format of racing brings. This season is set to be the most exhilarating yet, with 11 teams (including the likes of Nissan, Jaguar, Virgin, Audi, and Alexander’s team – BMW i Andretti Motorsport) contesting ePrix races spread across each corner of the globe. This season marks the change to Gen2 race cars, with increased battery capacity to last an entire race, ending the need for mid-race car swaps. The cars deliver 250kW of power, with 200kW available during races, and will have a maximum speed of 280km/h (174mph). Formula E races also come with the added dynamic of drivers receiving extra oomph for their cars via Attack Mode (initiated by the driver) and Fan Boost (initiated by a driver’s social following) – both enhancing the spectacle and unpredictability of these electric street races. Excited yet? We can’t wait!
Alexander Sims: Not your average race car driver
Alexander has achieved major success since joining BMW Motorsport as a works driver in 2014. Prior to his first season in Formula E, he made his mark in karting, single-seater and GT racing. He’s celebrated success in Formula 3 Euro Series, FIA European F3 Championship, British GT Championship, ADAC Zurich 24-Hour Race, Total 24 Hours of Spa and most recently the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Away from racing, Alexander has another passion – he’s a long-time advocate of renewable and clean energy. Which is in fact, how we first met him – as our sister company The Phoenix Works installed solar panels at his house. And well, we just hit it off! Alexander says, “I was impressed by the team and how the business is looking to really drive the way renewable energy and clean technologies work together to address climate change and fuel poverty.” Alexander also has big plans for his new barn conversion in the Midlands – the teams at Tonik and The Phoenix Works will be powering his new home with green energy and installing ground source heat pumps and EV chargers. Outside of his own back yard, Alexander really does “walk the walk” when it comes to renewables; he is a trustee of Zero Carbon World – a charity committed to the decarbonisation of the UK economy.
Formula E is Alexander’s opportunity to combine his love of cars with his mission to bring electric vehicles - and renewable energy - into the mainstream. As he puts it, “It’s a dream come true to be part of Formula E, and it’s something I’m hugely invested in on a personal level. It’s a great way to engage a young market and get the message out on the benefits of low-carbon vehicles.”
Tonik & Alexander: We’re in this together for the greater good!
Alexander with Tonik MD Chris Russell (L) and Product Director Steve Springett (R)
When it comes to what we want to achieve in regards to supporting the UK’s transition to a zero-carbon future, Tonik and Alexander couldn’t be more aligned. “I’m really looking forward to working with Tonik, it's a brand that shares the same values and ethos as me,” says Alexander. Our MD, Chris Russell, is on the same page, “We’re extremely excited to be working with someone so passionate about renewable energy. People need someone that can capture their imagination, someone who can demonstrate that the phenomenal power of renewable energy doesn’t mean compromising on performance. And with Alexander in the driving seat, it’s going to be that much easier to inspire people to work towards a low-carbon future.”
Over the course of the season we’ll be creating all sorts of content together with Alexander to help make getting excited about low carbon tech really easy – and importantly that the implications of selecting the right technology solutions for your home, workplace, or business are well understood too. Steve Springett, Product Director at Tonik, says, “We approach selecting our green energy and low carbon products with thorough due diligence, meaning our members don’t need to worry when it comes to choosing sustainable solutions, but we don’t want you to just take our word for it. As a Formula E driver, it’s hard to find anyone else with standards higher than Alexander – so having him using and putting our products to the test in his own home is invaluable to us.”
