We just got greener

Sep 15, 2017 - 2min read

As you know, our electricity is 100% renewable. And while we’re proud to offer carbon-neutral electricity, gas has been on our minds too. We are pleased to announce, therefore, two new tariffs which incorporate green gas:

  • Positively Greener: a tariff which offers 10% renewable gas in addition to the 100% renewable electricity.
  • Positively Greenest: a tariff which is fully carbon neutral. In addition to the 100% renewable electricity and the 10% green gas, the 90% remaining gas – the non-renewable kind – is carbon offset.

Tonik’s MD Chris Russell says “We’ve always prided ourselves on offering our members the most environmentally friendly tariffs at the fairest prices possible. Now we’ve made it possible for our members to choose to be greener than ever before, and truly minimise their impact on the environment.”

Green gas

We ensure that 10% of the gas you use comes from renewable sources. Green gas, also known as biomethane, is produced by animal and vegetation waste (we bet you never thought there was a connection between pig poo and your hot water!) and the process of generating this biogas emits far less carbon dioxide than with fossil fuels.

Why 10% green gas

There is currently a far higher percentage of renewable electricity than renewable gas in the grid. Gas is slowly catching up and with our new tariffs we are happy to supply even higher proportions of green gas. Most other suppliers – if they offer green gas at all – provide just 5-6% renewable gas.

Carbon offset

Our Positively Greenest tariff offsets the remaining 90% of fossil fuel generated gas by investing in projects which fund the equivalent reduction in carbon emissions elsewhere. Combined with 100% renewable electricity, this ensures your home’s energy use is completely carbon neutral.
